Most ESTA applications come back approved within minutes. A few take three days. Knowing which case you are in changes when you should apply.
The realistic timeline
| Outcome | How often | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic approval | The large majority | Minutes to a few hours |
| Manual review, then approval | A minority | Up to 72 hours |
| Manual review, then refusal | Rare | Up to 72 hours |
Through our service we aim to review your details and return a result within 2 to 4 hours. Where the US authorities open an additional check, the decision sits with them and can take up to 72 hours.
Why some applications take longer
An application leaves the automatic track for a handful of reasons:
- Your name resembles an entry on a watch list. This is common with frequent surnames and clears on its own.
- You answered yes to one of the eligibility questions.
- Your details do not match the passport record exactly.
- You have travelled to one of the restricted countries.
- You have a previous refusal or overstay on record.
You cannot speed this up. There is no priority queue and no fast track, whatever a third party promises.
When to apply
The US authorities recommend applying at least 72 hours before departure. We would go further: apply the day your trip is confirmed.
The reason is simple. If your application is refused, your fallback is a B-1/B-2 visa from a US embassy, and consular appointments run from weeks to many months depending on the post. Discovering that three days before a flight is an expensive way to learn it.
What happens after you apply
- You complete the form and pay.
- We check your details for the errors that cause refusals.
- Your application goes to the US authorities.
- The system returns one of three statuses: Authorization Approved, Travel Not Authorized, or Authorization Pending.
- You receive the outcome by email.
Authorization Pending is not bad news. It simply means a person is looking at the file. Wait, and check again after 72 hours.
Do not book on hope
An approved ESTA is not a formality you can assume. Until you hold one, treat your trip as unconfirmed. Book refundable fares if your dates are tight.

Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to get a faster decision?
No. The decision speed belongs to the US authorities. Nobody can buy priority.
I applied three days ago and still see Pending. What now?
Wait for the full 72 hours to pass, then check again. If it is still pending after that, contact us and we will look into it.
Can I travel while my application is pending?
No. The airline checks your status before boarding and will refuse you without an approval.
Does a fast approval mean I will definitely be let in?
No. Approval lets you board. Admission is decided at the border. See what happens on arrival.
How long does the approval then last?
Two years, or until your passport expires. Details in our guide to ESTA validity.
Apply early, travel calm
The cheapest insurance against a delay is applying the moment your trip is decided.
