US Customs: What You Can Bring and What’s Prohibited

US customs regulations are strict and consistently enforced. Knowing the rules saves you unpleasant surprises upon entry. Here are the most important regulations at a glance.

Duty-Free Allowances for Travelers

Adult travelers may bring in up to 200 cigarettes or 100 cigars, plus one liter of alcohol, duty-free, provided they meet the legal minimum age. Gifts and personal items up to a total value of 100 USD are also duty-free.

Cash and Monetary Instruments

If you are carrying cash, checks, or other monetary instruments totaling 10,000 USD or more, you must declare this in writing upon entry. Failure to do so can result in significant penalties.

Prohibited and Restricted Items

Fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, and dairy products generally may not be brought in. Certain plants, seeds, and souvenirs made from protected animal species (e.g., ivory or certain leather goods) are also subject to strict import bans. Medications should always be carried in their original packaging with the package insert.

Filling Out the Customs Declaration Correctly

Every person entering the country must submit a customs declaration, which today is usually recorded digitally by the border authority. Truthfully declare any agricultural products, large amounts of cash, and commercial goods you are carrying, false statements can lead to fines or denial of entry.

What Penalties Apply for Violations

If undeclared or prohibited items are found, you risk confiscation, fines, and in serious cases even criminal consequences. When in doubt: it’s better to over-declare than under-declare.
